About
Atelier L'Orné was founded by Ellie Burson, an interior designer based in Los Angeles, California, and Ikram El Fatihi, a French professor based in Safi, Morocco. United by a shared passion for beauty and culture, Atelier L'Orné was created to incorporate global craftsmanship in interior design. With our first import of handmade pottery from Safi, Morocco, we aim to bring unique home decor items to design and culture enthusiasts, celebrating the artistry and traditions of Morocco and beyond.
From Safi, Morocco to Your Table: The Story Behind Our Handcrafted Pottery
At Atelier L’Orné, every piece we offer carries a story—one that begins deep in the heart of Morocco, in the historic coastal city of Safi. Known as the pottery capital of the country, Safi is home to generations of artisans who have shaped clay into functional art for centuries. It’s here, inside the winding alleys of the Medina, that our founder Ikram carefully curates each item we import—sourcing directly from family-run workshops that preserve the traditions of Moroccan craftsmanship.
The Legacy of Safi Pottery
Safi’s ceramic legacy dates back to the 12th century, when Andalusian potters introduced techniques that have remained largely unchanged. The city’s rich red clay—dug from surrounding hills—is known for its strength and earthy hue, making it ideal for wheel-thrown pottery. What makes Safi ceramics so distinct is the fusion of ancient Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences, all blended into patterns that tell stories of place, people, and heritage.
Each plate, bowl, and vase is handmade by skilled artisans who often begin learning their craft as children. In small, open-air studios tucked behind Medina doors, clay is shaped by hand and on the wheel, left to dry in the sun, and then fired in traditional kilns. Artisans paint freehand with brushes made of palm fibers, layering intricate geometric designs or floral motifs in signature glazes—deep indigo, saffron yellow, pomegranate red. Finally, the pieces are glazed and fired again to achieve their distinctive, glassy finish.
Our Process: Curated with Intention, Shipped with Care
Ikram, a Moroccan native and founder, works directly with makers in Safi—ensuring fair wages and honoring the artistry behind each piece. Ikram walks the Medina weekly, visiting workshops and handpicking pieces. Nothing is mass-produced. Every shipment is a capsule of artistry: curated, custom-wrapped, and thoughtfully shipped to the USA for you.
Once stateside, each piece is unwrapped, inspected, and re-packed at our studio before arriving at your home. Whether you’re using our plates for a quiet dinner or displaying pottery as art, you’re holding something that passed through the hands of a maker and a merchant, across borders and generations.
Why It Matters
In a world of fast manufacturing, these pieces remind us of the beauty of slow craft—of hands in clay, of patterns passed down by memory, and of a global connection that values artistry over automation. When you choose our Moroccan pottery, you’re not just buying a dish or a bowl. You’re preserving a tradition, supporting a community, and bringing a piece of the Medina into your everyday life.
We are honored to be a part of that story.
